1. Start with sleep position
- Side sleepers: start fuller, then remove fill until your neck is level with your spine.
- Back sleepers: use medium loft so your chin does not tilt toward your chest.
- Stomach sleepers: remove more fill or choose a softer pillow to reduce neck rotation.
2. Decide how firm you want the fill to feel
More fill increases height and resistance. Less fill makes the pillow flatter and more moldable. If you want a firmer pillow, compare this page with our best firm pillow guide.
3. Check the cover and certifications
A breathable bamboo-derived or ventilated cover helps the loose fill sleep cooler. For sensitive sleepers, prioritize CertiPUR-US, GREENGUARD Gold, or OEKO-TEX references when available.
4. Expect a break-in period
Shredded foam can feel overfilled during the first few nights. Fluff it aggressively, sleep on it for two or three nights, then adjust fill in small increments.
